Applications

PHTHALYL-L-GLUTAMIC ACID can be used to make (R)-(+)-THALIDOMIDE. It is a glutamic acid derivative with no therapeutic effect on leprosy, and is used together with antileprosy drugs to reduce leprosy reactions and to treat various types of leprosy reactions, such as enlarged lymph nodes, erythema nodosum, fever, arthralgia and neuralgia with good efficacy.
The immunomodulatory effects of thalidomide varied greatly according to experimental conditions, with sometimes conflicting results. Effects on lymphocytes include a decrease in CD4+ cells and stimulation of CD8+ cells, resulting in a decrease in the CD48 ratio.
